My parents have been spending time with me here in Nairobi, Kenya, and watching their experiences unfold, seeing their perspectives shift, and their minds broaden has reminded me of why it was so important for me to create the AWJ Retreat.
When they first arrived, my dad—who was initially hesitant about me coming to Africa—was struck by how different the reality was from the image he had formed based on media portrayals. They’ve been amazed by the warmth, friendliness, and the sense of safety here, not to mention the incredible food and vibrant culture. Seeing their eyes open to a new reality has been a powerful experience for me, deepening my connection to this place that has truly become my soul home.
Their journey reminds me of my own when I first visited Africa back in 2022. At that time, I was facing many of the same fears and doubts that people were projecting onto me. I remember hearing questions like, “Is it safe?” and concerns based on isolated stories from other countries. But I’m so glad I didn’t let those fears hold me back. That three-month trip across Southern and Eastern Africa was life-changing, and it completely transformed the way I see the entire continent of Africa.
What I discovered during that time was resilience, growth, and an incredible sense of humanity. Kenya opened my eyes to what is possible even when the odds seem stacked against you. The strength, patience, and beauty I encountered here showed me a world far richer than I had ever imagined.
This is why the AWJ Retreat is about so much more than just dance. Of course, dance is a big part of it, but the retreat is about helping people see and experience what Kenya—and Africa—truly has to offer. It’s about moving beyond misconceptions, stepping out of comfort zones, and embracing the freedom that comes from pushing your boundaries.
Seeing my parents' transformation has been a powerful reminder of how life-changing this retreat can be for others. Kenya is filled with beauty, growth, and opportunities to connect with ourselves, each other, and the world in ways we often don't expect. It’s a place that opens your heart and mind and shows you that there is so much more to the story than what we’ve been told.
The AWJ Retreat is a space where people can break free from fears and discover the beauty of connection. It’s a chance to witness firsthand the strength of communities and individuals who are capable of so much more than what meets the eye. This retreat is about embracing the unknown, pushing boundaries, and experiencing a transformation that will stay with you long after you leave.
So, if you’re ready to experience something beyond the ordinary, and to step into a space of growth, connection, and possibility, I invite you to join us. You won’t just be learning dance—you’ll be discovering a new world, a new version of yourself, and a new way of seeing life.
This is the essence of the AWJ Retreat, and I'm excited to share it with you.
